We are very excited to be bringing you an exclusive interview from Hollywood Actress Freya Tingley. Freya played Christina Wendall in the Netflix series Hemlock Grove. Since then she has played Wendy in the American TV Series ‘Once Upon a Time’ which is based on the Peter Pan novel and most recently she has played the role of Francine Valli in Jersey Boys, directed by Clint Eastwood. At just 21 years of age Freya is doing incredibly well for herself. Here’s whatFreya had to say about her journey as an actress with some very interesting tips and advice for you all.
When did you start training as an actress?
I started doing acting lessons when I was 14. I can’t remember exactly when I decided I wanted to be an actress but from an early age I was always really creative and desired to create and knew I would do something creative.
How did you find an agent?
My first agent I got because my acting teacher at the time recommended me to them.
When did you land your first big role and how did it happen?
My first big role was as Christina Wendall in the Netflix Series Hemlock Grove. I arrived in LA for pilot season of 2012 and after three months of auditioning I landed my role on that show.
Have you had to deal with much rejection in the industry?
A lot of people talk about rejection in the industry. To be honest with you, I’ve never viewed not booking an audition as rejection, because you haven’t got the role in the first place. I think it’s important to think that way because most of the auditions a person gets, they won’t book. If every time you didn’t book something you took it as rejection then that could be really disheartening. Every audition is an opportunity but once you leave the casting office you have to move on because if you don’t book that one, there’s always another bus.
What does a typical day at work involve for you?
As an actor your life is so sporadic and unpredictable. A lot of the times when I’m not on a film set I’m out auditioning, learning lines, reading scripts, doing acting classes or working out!
What’s the best thing about working as an actress?
The hot boys I get to meet! Haha, only kidding! I think the joy for any artist lies in creating and the desire to create an effect. No matter what is is you do the best part is always going to come back to that!
What’s the worst thing about working as an actress?
Nothing. You have to have a positive attitude and love everything about what you do!
What are the top tips and advice that you can give to YAFTA Students to help them in their acting careers?
Keep a positive attitude! If anyone tells you that you can’t do something or that being an actor isn’t “realistic” keep in mind that this is only because it’s not real for them but don’t let it deter you! Don’t have the attitude of a struggling artist. This term is thrown around a lot amongst artists who aren’t continually getting paid gigs. Even if that is the case, you can’t have that attitude – remember to keep positive and know that you’re the one who’s at the reigns of your career! Decide to have the attitude of a working artist and become the person who would be a working artist. Another thing is to be very judicial and discerning about who you choose to surround yourself with. Artists are some of the most attacked people in society, just look at the magazine stands! For this reason it’s important to surround yourself with positive people who make you feel good about yourself and your choices, not the opposite!
