Acting is not the easiest career path to choose, as any actor would agree. Yes, it’s full of disappointment, rejection and instability but it is also incredibly exciting, rewarding, challenging and ignites a fire in you that few other industries and roles could rival.
If you have the passion and commitment to pursue your acting dream career, these top tips offer a helpful insight and lessons learnt from experienced actors on what they wish they had known at the beginning of their acting journey.
1 Get to know how the industry
They say there is no business, like show business – and working in the entertainment industry does have its own unique structures, sectors, legal requirements, processes and protocols. Find how the industry works
2 You should never stop learning
Being an actor is a continuous developmental process. You can always improve your acting skills and hone your craft.
3 Build your showreel
As soon you can, look for opportunities to add to your showreel showcasing your skills. Build showreel material by taking part in student films and independent films. This will also help you develop and understand your casting type and how to market yourself.
3 Make connections
Look for opportunities to network with directors, fellow actors, attend workshops with casting directors to gain first-hand feedback and insight.
4 It’s not just about the talent – be nice
Being remembered as someone who is professional, on time, gets on well with crew and cast is equally as important as the talent you have. If you have a reputation as someone who is hard work, unreliable and rude you won’t be receiving many call backs know matter how good you are.
