YAFTA ADULT CLASS

About YAFTA

Here at YAFTA It is our aim to prepare all students for work as a professional film and TV actors. We educate our students to equip them with the necessary skills, tools, knowledge and psychological preparation, which is essential to succeed in the film and TV industry.

Our students have gone on to secure roles in major film & TV productions such as Coronation Street, BBC1’s In the Club, From Darkness and Happy Valley to name but a few. Others have been awarded places at highly competitive and prestigious drama schools. Whatever your desired career path in acting, YAFTA can help you to achieve your goals.

Syllabus

All of our students follow a structured syllabus which has been carefully designed by an expert team comprising of graduates from the world’s top drama schools including London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Central School of Speech and Drama (CSSD); Film & TV Agents and Occupational and Business Psychologists who specialise in assessment in selection.

Our syllabus is one of the most robust assessment processes offered in an academy of this nature and is open for all of our regular students to benefit from.

Our holistic style syllabus has been designed to develop a variety of skills required to work as a professional screen actor and is not simply focused on the skill of acting itself. Students will be prepared for all aspects of the acting industry to give them the best chance of success. All of these skills are transferable to the classroom, personal life and ultimately the working world.

We believe that the most appropriate way to assess progression is through continuous assessment of all aspects of the course. Therefore, students will not be assessed solely on an examination. Our assessment process takes into consideration all aspects of the educational programme at YAFTA and has four different elements:

In-Class Performance

Audition Performance

Audition Technique

On-Set Performance

Offering assessment on all components of the course allows students to gain credit for their commitment, time keeping skills, professional and motivated attitude, on- going performances in class as well as their performances on-set and in the final audition. This means you can be confident that those students who pass their exams have shown competence consistently throughout the year and in a range of environments.

There are two assessment dates throughout the year, one in January and one in July. A full syllabus and details of the assessment process will be sent to each student once their ability level has been established by their tutor, this can take a number of weeks after commencing classes.

Students must have 80% attendance throughout the year to be considered for their assessments.

Course Content

A full list of course aims and objectives will be sent to students after enrolment on the course.

In brief, the core areas that students will develop competence in are:

  • Technicalities of Acting for Screen
  • Emotion
  • Textual Awareness
  • Mechanics of Character
  • Improvisation
  • On-Set Skills
  • Audition Technique
  • Professionalism Skills
  • Industry Skills

Showcase & Awards

Students will participate in filming a short film at the end of each year. This film will be premiered at a cinema showcase and awards event. These events are a wonderful way to celebrate the achievements of the students. Family and friends are invited along to see the work of their loved ones on the big screen.

Teachers

Our teacher selection process is stringent to ensure that our students receive the best quality education possible.

You can rest assured that YAFTA teachers:

  • Hold recognised qualifications in acting
  • Are experienced teachers
  • Are experienced screen actors
  • Are DBS (CRB) Cleared
  • Hold Paediatric First Aid qualifications (if working with children).

Masterclasses

In order to supplement learning we hold regular masterclasses and workshops with industry professionals such as professional actors, casting directors, TV & film directors and agents to offer knowledge and expertise from an all round perspective. Please see our masterclass section for further information.

Fees

Our 60 minute classes are charged at £60.00 (£15 per session) (incl. VAT) per four weeks, which is payable via direct debit on a four weekly basis. This covers four one-hour weekly classes.

Our 90 minute classes are charged at £90.00 (£22.50 per session) (incl. VAT) per four weeks which is payable via direct debit on a four weekly basis. This covers four 90 minute weekly classes.

It is important that students commit to attending classes regularly. Our courses are structured which means that those students who miss classes regularly will miss out on important information and valuable practical learning hours.

If a student cannot commit to attending classes regularly it is possible to attend as a ‘Drop-In’ student which costs £19.00 (incl. VAT) per 60 minute session or £28.50 (incl. VAT) per 90 minute session, this is subject to availability. Drop-In students are not eligible to participate in the assessment process.

Taster Class

Students are expected to attend an initial half price taster session to determine which class they are most suited to.

You can book in for this by selecting the appropriate location, date and time from the section below.

There are always exceptions to the rule but as a general guide, adult actors must be working towards the YAFTA Advanced Certification and possess all of the required tools to enable an agent to represent them, in order to be considered for full representation with YAFTA Talent Agency.

If you aren’t in this position yet, don’t worry. Throughout your time at YAFTA, we will be developing your skills and tools to enable you gain agency representation.
